Classic dominoes is one of the most enduring tabletop games in the world. At our manufacturing facility in Ningbo, we have been producing high-quality domino sets for over a decade, and we know firsthand how a well-made set can turn an ordinary evening into a memorable gathering. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through everything from the anatomy of a domino tile to advanced scoring strategies, so you can play with skill and confidence.
A standard domino set consists of rectangular tiles divided into two square ends, each marked with a number of dots (pips) from zero (blank) to six. The most common set is the double-six set, which contains 28 tiles. Larger sets extend the pip count: a double-nine set has 55 tiles, a double-twelve set has 91 tiles, and a double-fifteen set boasts 136 tiles. The number of tiles grows quickly because every combination of two numbers (including doubles) is included.
The tile with the highest total is often called the “double-six” in a double-six set, and it is used to decide the first player. Understanding the composition of your set is the first step to enjoying the game. For a deeper dive into double-six specifics, you can read our article on double-six dominoes rules and strategies.
To start, shuffle all the dominoes face down on the table. Each player then draws a hand of tiles. The number drawn depends on the number of players and the game variant: typically 7 tiles for two players, 5 tiles for three or four players, and fewer for larger groups. The remaining tiles form the “boneyard” (also called the stock), kept face down for later drawing.
The player with the highest double, or the highest pip count if no double is drawn, places the first tile face up on the table. Play then continues to the left. If no one holds a double, players redraw until one appears.
The goal in classic dominoes is to be the first player to get rid of all your tiles. On your turn, you must match one end of a tile from your hand to one of the open ends of the chain on the table. The chain grows as tiles are placed end to end, and a tile can only be placed if its pip count matches the adjacent end. If you cannot play, you either draw from the boneyard (in the Draw game) or pass (in the Block game).
When a player plays their last tile, they shout “Domino!” and wins the round. If the game becomes blocked (no one can play), the player with the lowest total pip count in hand wins; the winner scores the sum of the opponents’ remaining pips in some versions. These basic rules translate across most classic variants.
The two most fundamental domino games are Block and Draw. In the Block game, players simply pass when they cannot match an open end; no drawing is allowed. This makes planning and tile conservation essential, since a player who runs out of valid moves is stuck waiting.
The Draw game is more forgiving: when you cannot play, you draw a tile from the boneyard. If the drawn tile still cannot be played, you keep it and pass. This adds a luck element but keeps the game moving. Most casual players start with Draw dominoes because it is easy to learn and less punishing for beginners.
For players who enjoy accumulating points, Muggins (also called All Fives) is a popular scoring variation. In this game, you score whenever the sum of the two open ends of the chain is a multiple of five. For example, if the open ends show 3 and 2, the total is 5, and you score 1 point. If the total is 10, you score 2 points, and so on.
After each tile placement, the open ends are counted. Doubles are counted as both ends combined. The first player to reach a target score, such as 100 or 200, wins. Muggins rewards careful calculation, and the same basic principles apply to more complex variants like Five-Up, where multiple open ends are used.
Dominoes have evolved into countless regional variations. The Spanish and Latin American version is played with the double-nine set and emphasizes blocking and team play. In Cuba, the double-nine game is almost a national pastime, with rapid-fire placing all along the table.
The Mexican Train game, played with a double-twelve set, is a favorite in North American family gatherings. Each player builds their own personal train from a central hub, and players can also start a Mexican Train that anyone can play on. This variation is easy to learn, accommodates up to eight players, and is a great way to introduce new people to dominoes.
If you are looking for a robust set that handles Mexican Train well, a double-twelve set is the standard choice. Our double-twelve aluminum box Mexican Train dominoes are designed with clear, durable tiles that stand up to frequent play.
